Original U.S. 19th Century Allen & Thurber Style Single Shot Pocket Percussion Pistol circa 1845 - Matching Serial 344
Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice single shot double action pocket percussion pistol, made circa 1845 very much in the style of Allen and Thurber, a well-known producer of both single shot pistols and pepperbox revolvers. The pistol is relatively worn on the outside, and shows signs of a lot of cleaning on the exterior rear barrel area. We have considered that this may in fact BE an Allen & Thurber, and an early one at that, as it has the more angled grip typical of the Norwich Period. Definitely some interesting research potential!
The pistol has a single 2 inch steel barrel in approximately .30" Caliber, though the bore is quite worn, so it may have been smaller originally. The pistol is marked with serial number 344 on the frame under the grips, under the barrel, inside the trigger guard, and on the inside of both grip scales. That makes this a very nice "ALL MATCHING" example, with no parts swapped out over the years! The frame has the typical foliate engraving we see on revolvers like this, and has a hammer very much like the Allen "Tube hammer", which is double action.
It has lovely bag-style walnut grip plates, which definitely show wear from use, and the right side scale has cracked in half, and then been glued back together. The trigger is protected by a sizable trigger guard, which would help when concealed to prevent accidental firing. The condition is very good considering the age, and shows a gray speckled patina over the frame and action. The double action mechanics work fine, however the bore is pretty much a stove pipe. This gun definitely saw a lot of use during its service life.
A very nice early U.S. Pocket pistol, possibly made by Allen & Thurber of Norwich. Ready to research and display!
