Original German WWII NSRL National Socialist Sports Association Flag Cut Out & Hemmed Insignia - 57" x 41"

Regular price $495.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice cut out insignia section for a large WWII German flag, issued for the National Socialist League of the Reich for Physical Exercise (Nationalsozialistischer Reichsbund für Leibesübungen - NSRL). After being cut out, the edges were nicely hemmed to prevent the fabric from fraying, and based on the size of the insignia, it must have been from a very large flag.

The flag section feels like it is made of dyed wool fabric, and shows a large large white vertical stripe which contains the NSRL logo inside a large white circle, which is partly cut off. The logo is a rectangular Reichsadler (State Eagle), which has a canted Swas (Hook Cross) in the middle. There are small portions of the red field of the original flag in the corners.

The flag section measures 57 inches tall, and 41 inches wide, and we estimate that the flag it came from must have been at least 12 feet long, if not larger, so we can understand why the USGI who brought it back would have cut off just the insignia portion.

The flag section has a lovely service used look, with age toning and fading, and also shows some repairs, so it was definitely not a flag that lived in a depot.

The National Socialist League of the Reich for Physical Exercise (German: Nationalsozialistischer Reichsbund für Leibesübungen, abbreviated NSRL), was the umbrella organization for sports and physical education in NSDAP Germany. The NSRL was known as the German League of the Reich for Physical Exercise (German: Deutscher Reichsbund für Leibesübungen, abbreviated DRL) until 1938. The organization was expanded to Austria after that country's annexation by NSDAP Germany.

The NSRL was led by the Reichssportführer, who after 1934 was at the same time presiding over the German National Olympic Committee. The NSRL's leaders were Hans von Tschammer und Osten (1933–1943), Arno Breitmeyer (1943–1944) and Karl Ritter von Halt (1944–1945).
